We arrived in Costa Rica towards the end of January and since then, we have been living next to a beach on the Pacific, at the edge of the jungle. Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world and, with few humans for miles around, we are very safe from Covid, although less safe from all the scorpions and venomous snakes! We loved our time in Italy but in the end had to leave because of the disastrous Brexit which puts a limit on how long we can stay in Europe. We searched for a place which was both relatively safe from Covid and with its borders open. Also, we preferred to be warm if at all possible – a rather counter-intuitive move since we had to give away all our winter gear and try to kit out for the tropics from Brindisi’s Decathlon which was replete with skiwear and thermals and strangely devoid of tropical wear. We arrived during the dry season (mid-November to April), yet it has very unusually been raining some nights, and when it rains, the noise is intense…we cannot even hear each other talk.
Our Jobs
We are volunteering for a charity, FundaciΓ³n Saimiri, which protects monkeys and their habitat. The charityβs current focus is the spider monkey, which is officially βendangeredβ for a few reasons, mainly deforestation by landowners for the purpose of crop growing or cattle raising, but also because they are hunted and eaten by indigenous ethnic groups. We are living with the president of the charity and helping her in whichever way we canβ¦sometimes fundraising, sometimes just looking after her son so that she has time herself to work. The president and her lovely family are so inspiring to live off grid and sacrifice comforts in order to protect the magnificent monkeys. It has been a real honour to help them where we can.
Our Home
During the night, there is a sonorous chorus of animals which is so soothing, we sleep right through all the sounds they make. Itβs strange how the electrical buzz of a fridge or a fan can keep us awake, yet the sounds of nature just help us to sleep. At sunrise, we awake to the sight and sounds of beautiful birds and howler monkeys all around usβ¦just incredible, something we donβt think we will ever get used to. It feels like we are living inside a David Attenborough documentary. It all sounds like a dream come true, but only if the dream includes huge bugs crawling everywhere in your home all the time, treating us 24/7 as an ‘all you can eat’ exotic European buffet. Costa Rica has 750,000 species of insects, and sometimes it feels they are all in our casita. We have learned to turn out the lights at 6pm to avoid an open invitation to the buffet, and we then survive the evening with our red lit headlamps (which seem to attract our favourite bug: the firefly), go to sleep at 9pm and get up with the sun at around 5am.
Some of our delightful bugs…a day never goes by without shrieks of horror, especially when they land on us in the dark. A cockroach even once landed in our food. At least we have not yet encountered a blue scorpion.
Apart from howler monkeys, all the other Costa Rica based monkey species have paid us visits including these beautiful spider and white faced monkeys.
Daily Lives After Work
We have made the most of being only 50 metres from the beach. We swim every day in the warm, almost hot, Pacific Ocean. In the process we are becoming much healthier, losing weight from all the amazing pasta, pizza, taralli and olive oil we had gulped down in Italy. Even in the ocean, the wildlife documentary continues, as we watch in awe and from incredibly near at the white ibis and at the pelicans who dive into the water from a great height to nab their prey.
These leaf-cutting ants work day and night to carry leaves to their nest – they compost the leaves to cultivate a fungus which they eat. They have been doing this for 23 million years: neither the ants nor the fungus can survive without the other. However, a scene which could be imagined only in horror movies, has recently become common: another fungus called Cordyceps has been injecting itself into the ants and controlling their minds to leave the nest and wander off to a spot where they die miserably as the fungus sprouts out of the ants’ bodies.
We watch in wonder too at the thousands of hermit crabs which carry makeshift homes on their backs and, when we approach, roll into them to look exactly like pebbles. A couple of other amazing things about these creatures: the only time they change other than to move home is to copulate, and also, if their shell is too small for them, they have the crazy ability to shrink in size.
Weekends Away
We donβt work on weekends, so we have spent our time in nearby slices of paradise. An area called La Tarde, where the BBC recently encamped to track ocelots, is most famous for its population of venomous frogs and snakes and we were thrilled to see a few of them and so many other amazing creatures:
Next
We will probably stay in Central America for the next few months before returning to the UK to get our vaccinations. We’ll update this blog again before we leave. Hasta luego, see you soon!
P.S. Ask someone in Costa Rica anything…How are you, how’s the weather, how’s life…the answer is always Pura Vida. It means so many things: Let’s all smile, have no regrets and be happy for what we have. Everything is great. Enjoy life. Love nature and live a simple natural life.

What an amazing adventure! Iβm so proud!
Looks like you’re having a wonderful time!
Kisses – Thierry
Thierry, you must come here with your family and definitely with your camera! Much love xx
What a terrific blog. Thank you, I LOVE it
Pura Vida!
Hi Krystyna, Pura Vida! Maybe you can arrange a field trip here? After all, there are tons of medicinal plants which need to be researched! Just let me know when you are arriving and we’ll meet you at the airport. I’m sure we could also sort out a tennis game! Much love xx
Jeff
Thank you so much for going to so much trouble. You do bring to life your wonderful adventure. It is paradise. We only spent a day on the west coast but it was fabulous and also saw the frogs and 3 toed sloth.
Keep enjoying.
Hi Geoffrey, It will hopefully serve as a nice memory we can look back on. Hopefully we will get a better view of the sloth before we leave! We plan to spend a week or so on holiday around Arenal and Monteverde at some point and we’d also love to volunteer for a turtle charity on the Caribbean coast before we leave…that coast is also meant to be very different for its Jamaican culture which would be very interesting. Love to the family xx
Refreshing and stimulating experience!! What a place! Nature, pure Nature, so close, so soothing for our bodies and souls. Once again, Congrats , with a capital C!
If we could only get together, I could listen to you both, for days… and I could learn from you so many things!.
Im sure it will happen, sooner or later we ll meet again… wherever. Lets be open to the Experience…
I was wondering if you are close to Santa Teresa, my friend s son, has been living there since November, he s a musician and he s delighted!
Love to you both!
Marta
Hi Marta
Completely agree about how Nature is soothing in every single way perhaps with the exception of our insect bites which are anything but soothing for our bodies! As for our souls though, yes, we feel part of something beautiful here. It also helps to be away from the tourist sites. There are not so many tourists at the moment but the animals in those sites have, over a few generations, sadly changed their habits. Instead of relying on the natural world, the monkeys visit the hotels for food and even sloths come down from high up in their trees. This is great for the tourists but just horrible for nature…the monkeys are great seed dispersers and are really helpful themselves in reforesting and counteracting the deforestation damage caused by humans, but if they no longer feed on the fruits of the forest, then they will no longer disperse their seeds. Humans just continue to mess with this beautiful world. We don’t think we’ll make it to Santa Teresa, it’s quite far…and yes, we also look forward to spending lots of time with you one day hopefully very soon. Much love xx
Quel magnifique pΓ©riple !
Excellent Sylvie and Jeff
What an adventure
Reading your blog I almost felt those creepy crawlies landing on me
Have fun
Be safe
Veena
Hi Veena, I am sure you will love it here. As for the creepy crawlies, they provide us with an amazing aversion therapy! We are now just taking them in our stride without screaming every single time. Be well. Love xx
Ok…right…we are officially very jealous!! What a fabulous place to be. We were supposed to go to Costa Rica last February to take a tour but Ray collapsed the day before we were going. It was pnuemonia but just pre covid so you can imagine it was quite an emergency. Anyway saw GP who said NO!! In fact if we had come out he may not have survived the flight and the locals would have definitely thought covid…..so it is just as well. However your wonderful photos have made us keen to make the trip as soon as we can….one vaccination down and one to go!! I loved the monkey and the baby up the tree!! And the birds are simply marvellous. Not sure I would survive the insects though!! Good for you….what amazing adventures you are having. And that is what life is about and what many people are learning in the covid world. Stay well and have fun….Ros xx
Hi Ros, Pura vida, that’s what it’s all about! When we are back in the UK in the summer, we can meet up for tea and give you a few tips on what to see here. Our charity has helped us find the best spots which are not full of tourists (tourism here is at 30% of what’s normal, so we still need to avoid those places because of covid and we would want to have avoided them anyway) and has found for us the best guides (we’ll keep their contact details). We recommend coming in the dry season, which starts in mid November, so you have time to plan. It will be great. In the meantime, wishing you both well. Love xx
Sylvie and Jeff wow what an incredible journey. You both are so adventurous not many like you !! We enjoyed doing the journey with you and enjoyed every minute of seeing and hearing your experiences. Thank you for sharing. Hasta Luego Lily and Cedric
Lily and Cedric, there are not many people like you either. Such treasures in our lives. We look forward to seeing you soon. Love, Jeff and Sylvie xx
As we encounter the natural world less and less we have fewer opportunities to fall in love with nature and we cannot care about something we do not love.
Therefore, itβs so good to notice every flower, every tree, every insect, every animal we encounter because noticing is how we fall in love. And wherever you can, plant opportunities for others to fall in love too. Keep on exploring our amazing world and sharing all those interesting things is a great affairs too! Thank you for sharing π
Pura vida π
Such wise and beautiful words! we feel completely at one with them. Thank you for sharing them. Love xx
Love your photos and your chit chat of what you have been up to. You have certainly have had many adventures since leaving your home in London. How wonderful it must be to be amongst the wild life and beats going to work each day!
Thanks Nicole. The last two and a half years have been pretty wild. Thankfully, we are both still really enjoying it…if one of us gets tired and wants to settle down somewhere, then we both will. At the moment, we can’t see that happening for a while, but you never know. We are very lucky to have remained healthy and never take that for granted. Before we call it a day, we will definitely spend time with both of you, and we would of course have been with you now if NZ had kept its borders open. All our love xx
This blog was beautiful in every way.
It made my yearning to travel again all the more strong.
I did although get the creeps after watching the video clips of the reptiles and amphibians. But was certainly in awe of the beautiful nature you captured through your lens. Looking forward to another exciting blog.
Aaah, thanks Rayeesa. We so look forward to taking an adventure with you one day soon. Life is short. Let us know the dates you think you may be able to travel post covid and we’ll start to plan! Dreams can come true! Much love from us both xx
We just sat down as a family to look at this on the big screen and we all loved it! Thanks so much for sharing, what an amazing experience you are having together! The kids want to visit!! Much love, Claire, Greg, Mimi, Jojo and Sadie
Wow, that’s so beautiful. We are so touched! Costa Rica would be a great place to bring the children. Some things are pricey but the country has a reputation for being very safe (esp compared to its neighbours) and nearly all the trails are easy and child friendly. Choosing the month to visit will be important because you wouldn’t want to miss the turtles nesting… hopefully we have that treat in store for us. We miss you all so much. Sending all our hugs and love xx
Thank you, Sylvie and Jeff, for allowing us all to travel the world with you, if only through your postings!
What a wonderful adventure! During this full year of confinement, following you feels like a breath of fresh air and I hope that you will continue to bring us more of the beautiful world we live in. Stay safe, stay happy and stay in touch! Happy birthday, Sylvie!! Let’s hope that we will soon be able to meet again.
Dear Iona
You absolutely do travel with us as we are regularly talking about you… especially when it comes to food! The diet for most here is rice and beans three times a day. We have been lucky to have had our own kitchen and the supermarkets and organic farmers’ markets have been amazing, so we would have had fun cooking together. Once the pandemic fades away, we will definitely visit you, whether in Miami or Montreal or both. Stay well. Sending you our love xx
What a fabulous adventure Jeff and Sylvie we envy your intrepidness!
Our daughter was in Costa Rica in 2019 and we marvelled at its beauty and diversity. Thank you for the fab updates which I forward to 90 year old Alex a member of our community who really enjoys them.
Safe travels an keep safe.
Thanks Reeva. We feel really privileged to be on this path. We truly miss our family and friends (much much more than our home and its comforts) but we would not have been able to see them anyway over the past year. Thanks for forwarding to Alex. I played tennis with him just a few years ago, he was playing like a pro in his late 80s. P-G by the rest of us! Please do send him our best wishes. We’ll probably be back later this year for our jabs, so we look forward to seeing you then. Love, Jeff and Sylvie xx
Pura Vida !
Miss you greatly. Miss our London routine starting with You know WWW, A nice theatre show, lovely wandering afterwards, probably along the Thames. You are far away on the other side of the world, we are on the other side, Corona, etc.
Looking curiously forward and wonder when and where shall we meet again.
Until then,
Pura Vida
Hi Sylvie and Jeff. Costa Rica looks fantastic. I’m so pleased for you to have reached what looks like Paradise on Earth…apart from the biting insects. How marvellous to see rare creatures like the sloth and the potoo for real in their natural environment! Some species look familiar, like the shield bug. And our familiar London Plane tree also has that trick of shedding bark. In the plane’s case it helps it deal with environmental pollution. That’s why the Victorians planted them along the filthy sooty city streets. Other trees couldn’t cope!
It’s great you will be returning to get those vaccinations. Keep safe! And do let us know when you will be back in London. Love from us both xx
Hi Fiona and David
Thank you for your kind words. With your love of nature, you would love it here. We decided against returning to the UK because of the nuisance of quarantining. Instead, we are about to go to the US for our vaccinations and to see family there, so we should be back in the UK in September. Much love xx
